Summary
This article is an introduction to a series of columns which, month after month, will tackle the subjects summarized in the title. The huge increase in air-conditioners installed is creating a lot of problems which should not be neglected, such as peak power loads, an increase in environmental pollution, and the worrying spreading of a phenomenon known as "heat islands". There are measures and solutions which we ought to take immediately into consideration.
