CONSIDERS RELEVANT GERMAN REGULATIONS, STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES. TREATS ROOM AIR FLOW AND THEIR EFFECT ON CONTAMINANT REMOVAL. DISCUSSES THE RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FUME CUPBOARD AS AN AIR HANDLING ELEMENT. ILLUSTRATES DIAGRAMMATICALLY EXAMPLES DEMONSTRATING THE USE OF FUME CUPBOARDS IN LABORATORIES AND EXPLAINS HOW CORRECTLOCATION AND CONTROL OF FUME CUPBOARDS WITH STABILISATION OF THE AIR FLOW CAN ENSURE LOW AIR FLOWS AND SAFETY FOR THE OCCUPANTS.
