THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE CONVERSION OF AN EXISTING CONSTANT VOLUME SYSTEM TO A VARIABLE VOLUME SYSTEM. THE FOLLOWING POINTS MUST BE CONSIDERED IN THE DECISION TO CONVERT: THE RATIO OF DESIGN COOLING LOAD TO MINIMUM COOLING LOAD; THE TYPE OF AIR DIFFUSERS; AND, MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED TO FAN SYSTEMS. EACH OF THESE POINTS IS DISCUSSED WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SYSTEM AND FAN CHARACTERISTICS. GRAPHS SHOW FAN AND SYSTEM CURVES WITH VOLUME DISCHARGE DAMPER CONTROL AND ALSO WITH VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL. A FURTHER GRAPH SHOWS FAN BRAKE HORSEPOWER VERSUS AIR FLOW FOR VARIOUS FAN DESIGNS.
