Summary

THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON FAULT OCCURRENCE IS LIMITED. HOWEVER THE AUTHORS HAVE ANALYSED A NUMBER OF SYSTEMS USING RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS OF HERMETIC, SEMI-HERMETIC OR OPEN DRIVE DESIGN UP TO NOMINAL MOTOR POWERS OF 75 KILOW. THE SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN SPLIT BETWEEN LOW TEMPERATURE, DOWN TO 233 K (-40 DEG C) EVAPORATION, MEDIUM AND HIGH TEMPERATURE DUTIES, AND INCLUDE COLD STORAGE, VEHICLE REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING. THE LARGER NUMBER OF FAULTS APPEAR TO BE DUE TO INSTALLATION AND OPERATING FACTORS, MOST ATTRIBUTABLE TO PROBLEMS OF OIL OR REFRIGERANT MIGRATION AND CONTROL FAULTS. THE SURVEY RESULTS ARE TABULATED AND THE PRINCIPAL CAUSES AND EFFECTS ARE DISCUSSED. D.W.H.
