AS A GENERAL RULE WITH HERMETIC AND SEMI-HERMETIC RECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS, LIQUID SUCTION IS CAUSED BY OIL FOAMING AT START-UP, OR BY EVAPORATOR OVERFEEDING. THIS PAPER ANALYSES CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF LIQUID SUCTION AND SUGGESTS SUITABLE MEASURES TO PREVENT THESE EVENTS SUCH AS LIMITATION OF REFRIGERANT CHARGE, PUMP-DOWN CYCLE, CRANKCASE HEATING AND A LIQUID RECEIVER ON THE SUCTION SIDE.
