Summary

A HEAT SWITCH USED AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES UTILIZES THE PRESSURE-DEPENDENCE OF THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF GASES AND THE DECREASE OF VAPOUR PRESSURE WITH TEMPERATURE. THE SWITCHING TEMPERATURE CAN BE VARIED WIDELY BY CHANGING THE WORKING GAS. DUE TO THE ABSENCE OF MECHANICALLY MOVING PARTS, LIFETIME AND RELIABILITY ARE HIGH. A THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY ON/OFF RATIO OF 500 CAN EASILY BE ACHIEVED.
