Summary

Experiments were conducted on flow boiling of a highly subcooling liquid from a cylinder in crossflow, to see how the liquid velocity and subcooling influence nucleate boiling, the critical heat fluxes, and film boiling. The ultimate goal was to see if an entirely positive-sloped boiling curve can exist at sufficiently high liquid velocity and subcooling without the presence of a jump transition to film boiling. Experimental results showed strong evidence of significant liquid-solid contact well into the stable film boiling regime. This motivated the development of a simple criterion for the occurence of liquid-solid contact in film boiling under such conditions.
