Summary

Points out that the precise mathematical solution of the differential equation for the power balance of a space permits its thermal characterization by only three parameters which can be further split to define and describe a generalised heating degree function as a three-dimensional surface: the climate surface. Explains how this, in combination with a design temperature difference surface, which represents the power demand, can be used to reproduce visually the energy demand of a room or building as affected by the climate in a form which is easy to interpret.
