Summary

Numerical simulation results about a hot water storage tank, as part of a solar/gas adsorption air conditioning system of 20 kW are shown. The storage system is fed by a field of flat plate collectors with highly efficient transparent cover. It provides regeneration heat for an activated carbon/methanol adsorption chiller, aided by a complementary natural gas heater to supply a working temperature of 100°C. For the overall operation of the cooling system, the ADSOL computer program couples the field of solar collectors with the hot water storage tank, the adsorbers, and the cold water storage tank. The simulations were performed using meteorological data valid for the last thirty years in Joao Pessoa (Northeast Brazil). The results we have presented and analyzed are as follows: hourly solar irradiation, temperatures in the tank and in the collectors, as well as the solar cover ratio, and the energy saving fraction.
