Analysis of multi-chiller systems for a commercial building in Brazil.
Author(s) : HERNANDEZ-NETO A., FLIGELMAN KANAS W.
Summary
The search for solutions to reduce energy consumption has been increasing and commercial buildings have an important role in the energy demand distribution in Brazil. For such buildings, the use of air conditioning systems is almost mandatory due to a combination of architectural solutions and climate conditions where the chiller is responsible for most of the energy consumption in an air conditioning system. This paper provides a comparison between different multi-chiller systems (single and parallel) regarding the reduction of the annual energy consumption and the simple payback period. The simulation tool Energy Plus combined with electronic spreadsheets allows evaluating the energy consumption and cooling load for typical commercial building in 03 Brazilian cities. The parallel configuration provides reduction of the building energy from 3 to 6% with a simple payback period from 2.9 to 7.7 years. The variation of simple payback period occurred due to the differences between the tariffs of electrical energy in each city.
