Summary

A SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ALLOW OPTICAL INVESTIGATION OF MATERIALS AT LOW TEMPERATURE AS A FUNCTION OF PRESSURE AND MAGNETIC FIELD. THE DESIGN MAKES POSSIBLE THE APPLICATION OF HYDROSTATIC PRESSURES TO 8 KBAR (800 MEGAPASCALS) WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY SUBJECTING THE SAMPLE TO THE FIELD OF A SMALL BORE (18.4 MILLIMETRE) SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET. THE PRESSURE GENERATION METHOD AND THE OPTICAL CONFIGURATION ARE DISCUSSED AND EXAMPLES OF 4 K LUMINESCENCE SPECTRA ARE GIVEN.
