Summary
Legionella pneumophila and other species of the genus are quite different from other non-fermentative Gram-negative rods in cultural features. They are facultative intracellular parasites for certain species of mammals and protozoa. Their viable counts vary according to environmental conditions. In order to prevent fatal Legionella pneumonia, viable counts of legionellae in water-containing equipment should be carefully controlled.
