Summary

BEHAVIOUR OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, VIZ. STEEL, CONCRETE, SOIL AND THEIR COMPOUNDS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR NORMAL TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS. CERTAIN BASIC STUDIES HAVE ALSO BEEN DONE ON THE CHARACTERISTIC BEHAVIOUR OF FOUNDATIONS AND STRUCTURAL MATERIALS AT HIGH TEMPERATURES. HOWEVER, CHARACTERISTICS OF CONSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND THEIR INTERACTIONS HAVE NOT BEEN SO WELL ESTABLISHED AND CLEARLY DEFINED AT VERY LOW TEMPERATURES AND SPECIALLY UNDER CRYOGENIC CONDITIONS. DUCTILE BEHAVIOUR AND RESERVE STRENGTH OF METALLIC STRUCTURES AND FOUNDATIONS, DUE TO THEIR PLASTIC BEHAVIOUR AT NORMAL TEMPERATURE, UNDERGO A RADICAL TRANSFORMATION IN THEIR BEHAVIOUR UNDER VERY LOW TEMPERATURE AND UNDER CRYOGENIC CONDITIONS. CONSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS FAIL TO RETAIN THEIR PROPERTIES DUE TO PLASTICITY AND THEY MORE OR LESS BEHAVE LIKE BRITTLE MATERIALS UNDER CRYOGENIC CONDITIONS. STRENGTH OF FOUNDATIONS AND STRUCTURES IN CRYOGENIC RCE SYSTEM SEEMS TO ASSUME PRACTICALLY VERY LOW VALUES. DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCH CONSTRUCTIONS UNDER CRYOGENIC CONDITIONS ARE NOT WELL DEFINED NOR WELL ESTABLISHED. A THOROUGH STUDY OF THESE CONSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS UNDER CRYOGENIC CONDITIONS IS ESSENTIAL TO ESTABLISH THE STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS ON A FIRM BASIS SO AS TO FORMULATE THE MECHANICS OF THESE MATERIALS FOR SUCH CONDITIONS.
