Summary

One of the main goals of EPBD–r Directive 2010/31/EU is building energy efficiency. To attain this goal thermal comfort and health issues should not be ignored. New systems have to be designed to create optimal living and working conditions for individual users which are based on person’s individual characteristics as well as their health status. The purpose of the paper is to: 1) present a new approach towards total building efficiency; 2) design and test a low exergy (LowEx) heating and cooling system that enables individualised climate for various users in the same room. The energy efficiency of the system as well as thermal comfort parameters were measured in real–time conditions a test room. For the test room, a hospital room for burn patient was selected because it presents an extremely demanding environment. On the basis of the measurements, the thermal comfort conditions for individual users were calculated. The possibility of individual control of thermal comfort conditions for other possible users (staff and visitor) were simulated. The results were then compared to a reference room equipped with the conventional system. The LowEx system for space heating was 11-27% more energy efficient than the conventional one, and was 32–73 % more efficient for cooling. Solving energetic problems together with thermal comfort issues presents an important step towards total building efficiency.
