Summary

A NUMERICAL METHOD WAS USED FOR CALCULATING THE THERMAL PERFORMANCES OF TWO INNOVATIVE MASONRY ELEMENTS. ONE OF THEM WAS SHAPED LIKE A SORT OF HONEYCOMB ANDTHE OTHER LIKE A SORT OF LABYRINTH. THERMAL ANALYSIS WAS DONE FOR ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE BLOCKS THAT WAS CONSIDERED REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE WHOLE ELEMENT. THE BOUNDARY CONDITIONS WERE SETTLED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO CONFIGURE A BIDIMENSIONAL SYSTEM. CONVECTION AND RADIATION WERE CONSIDERED ABSENT, BUT THE AIR THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY WAS INCREASED IN ORDER TO TAKE THEM INTO ACCOUNT. IT APPEARS THAT THE HONEYCOMB SHAPE RESULTS IN AN INCREASE OF ABOUT 25% IN THETHERMAL RESISTANCE OVER THAT OF THE LABYRINTH SHAPE OR NORMAL BLOCK. E. F.
