Cascade refrigerators with vortex tube stage.

Summary

The paper presents a new and different application of a vortex tube in air-conditioning systems, and freezers for biomaterial conservation are considered. Compressed air goes through the standard air conditioner where it is cooled up to 5 °C and then it goes to the vortex tube cascade. The outlet temperature of a cold stream is -15 to -25 °C. Temperatures of -15 to -70 °C can be reached in the two-cascade cycle which consists of a standard vapour-compressed refrigerator that is used as a precooling stage, and of a vortex tube as a final stage. Such refrigerators, as alternatives to existing freezers at -70 °C, are offered for small-scale systems for conservation of biomaterials. The main advantages of the refrigerator proposed are as follows: homogeneous cooling of specimens by airflow, ecologically safe, reliable, and low cost.
