CFD analysis in compressor design.

Summary

The purpose of this work is to present a review of a compressor manufacturer's experience and developments in CFD, focused on the compressor design. Some light is shed on the trade-off between the model complexity and the results needed. The tool applicability is discussed from the most simple CFD methodologies (one-dimensional, in-house codes), used in preliminary analysis of the compressor components, until the most complete CFD simulations, used to simulate almost all the compressor components in an integrated way. Moreover, it is presented the benefits and restrictions of the different methodologies, as well as the relationship between them when applied to the compressor analysis. Beyond the historical review of the author's experience, this work intends to present the expectations about the future of the CFD in compressor design, presenting the frontiers and barriers that must be overcome in order to make the most of this design tool.
