Summary

There are a number of actions which can be taken to make the refrigeration systems in supermarkets more energy efficient. Open display cabinets are still commonly seen in supermarkets. By equipping the open display cabinets with doors not only the cooling demand will decrease but also the temperature in the cabinets will become more even and the control of product quality easier. However, for the energy saving potential to be fully utilized, when equipping display cabinets with doors, all of the refrigeration system must be considered and adapted for the lower cooling demand. In this demonstration project an existing refrigeration system in a Supermarket A, situated in Borås, Sweden has been remade into a more efficient system with doors equipped and several changes of the refrigeration system. Measurements have been conducted, before and after the changes. The results in this paper present a saving in electric power demand of more than 75 %.
