Combined study of a D-mannitol based energy storage.

Number: 1884

Author(s) : VIALETTES L., FATAHI H., PONCET S.

Summary

In this study, a high melting point phase change material (PCM), namely D-mannitol from the sugar alcohol family, is considered for a thermal energy storage system within a hybrid compressed air energy storage system. First of all, a numeric model based on the enthalpy-porosity method is developed within the ANSYS Fluent V18.0 software and carefully validated against several sets of reference experimental data published in the literature for different PCMs and configurations. Then a new experimental set-up has been developed. Temperatures of D-mannitol at different locations within the cylindrical shape geometry have been monitored to investigate its melting. The simulations are again favorably compared to these new experimental data and the degradation of its performance is measured after several cycles of charging and discharging processes.
