Common sense cooling coils selection.

Summary

The author suggests that a larger than normal water temperature range over air-cooling coils can reduce total costs in an air-conditioning system. Although the coil cost will be higher due to the reduction in mean temperature difference for heat transfer, savings will be made on fan power, water piping and pumping. Also if the larger water range is divided sequentially between two water chillers, the higher temperature chiller will have reduced running costs. A complete example showing actual costs for a system indicate that if the piping lengths are long, it could be profitable to double the normal water range to about 13 deg C. D.W.H.
