Summary

Recently, a growing demand for small scale absorption chillers for both solar cooling and trigeneration, i.e. utilization of cogenerated heat for cooling, has been encountered. Until now, chillers below 35 kW were not available. Thus, a 10 kW absorption chiller with water-lithium bromide as the working fluid has been developed and successfully tested within a joint European project. The plant requires driving hot water of 80 to 100 °C and exhibits an optimized performance as compared to present standard plants: by means of a careful cycle design and a fully automated control the COP has been increased by about 10%. Further prototype development is in preparation.
