Summary

This study evaluates techno-economic performance of thermal energy storage (TES) technologies for industrial cooling flexibility across four European cities in different climate zones. Two project scenarios are analysed: new installations and add-on retrofits. Compared technologies include chilled water storage, ice-on-coil storage, and ice slurry systems produced via scraped-surface, vacuum, and supercooling methods. Hourly simulations consider ambient temperature, chiller efficiency, control strategies and dynamic electricity pricing under time-of-use (ToU) and spot tariffs. Results are reported across varying storage capacities and durations. Supercooling ice slurry performs best, achieving LCOE reductions up to 17% (ToU) and 10% (spot) scenarios. Ice slurry storage integration in (add-on) projects exhibit higher performance than in new projects. Electricity markets strongly influence outcomes; spot pricing lowers LCOE, especially in Switzerland and Spain. Future work should include other factors (renewable energy systems integration and demand response) for more comprehensive assessment of TES potential in industrial cooling.
