Comparison of Space Station version of ASTROMAG with two free-flyer versions.
Author(s) : GREEN M. A.
Type of article: Article
Summary
The paper compares the Space Station version of ASTROMAG with free-flyer versions of ASTROMAG which could fly on an Atlas IIA rocket and a Delta rocket. Launch with either free-flyer imposes severe weight limits on the magnet and its cryogenic system. The helium II pump loop which supplies helium to the gas cooled electrical leads can be eliminated in both of the free-flyer versions of the ASTROMAG magnet. The paper describes the superconducting dipole moment correction coils which are necessary for the magnet to operate on a free-flying satellite.
