Summary

Work aimed at finding a two-layer wall that is thermally equivalent to a generic multilayer wall, is reported on. An equivalent wall is defined as one having the same overall heat transfer coefficient and the same response to a sinusoidal input signal with a 24-hour period as the wall in question; it was also demonstrated that for building thermal simulation, such an equivalent wall gives a negligible error in the response to sinusoidal signals of other frequencies. Since it was not always possible to find the equivalent wall, the condition of equal time constant (product of thermal capacity by thermal resistance), previously assigned to the two layers of the equivalent wall is removed, and the existence of an equivalent wall is thus assured for all structures used in building industry.
