Conduction cooled MgB2 magnet for SMES application.

Author(s) : PETRILLO E., ARIANTE M., CAVALIERE V., et al.

Summary

The development of a SMES system (superconducting magnetic energy storage) based on a conduction cooled MgB2 magnet is described. The magnet, designed for a stored energy of 400 J, maximum operating current 100 A at 20 K, is composed of 4 staked double pancakes having internal diameter of 100 mm and external diameter of 230 mm. The general layout developed for the magnet cooling is described and results of cryogenic computation are reported together with preliminary measurements at 20 K of a single double pancake.
