Summary

This article presents new challenges for air-conditioning systems following the SARS calamity. To guarantee the safety of a building's environment, the air-conditioning system should not only maintain the thermal and humidity environment for comfort, the IAQ for health, but should also reduce humidified surfaces and massing duty particle areas as well as reduce the possibility of internal air circulation between different zones. Based on these new requirements, the article evaluates a new system concept: an outdoor air system for thermal and moisture loads and CO2 load as well as body odour, another individual radiation or convection system for sensible heat from building fabric and other heat sources. The system's configuration and energy performance are discussed.
