Summary

IN THE HISTORY OF REFRIGERATION, THE MOVERS OF INNOVATIONS WERE VERY DIFFERENT, FROM THE MOTIVATIONS OF THE FATHERS: PERKINS DEVISED HIS COMPRESSION MACHINE (1834), FOR FUN ; THE PHYSICIAN GORRIE DESIGNED HIS AIR MACHINE (1844) FOR RELIEVING THE PATIENTS OF HIS HOSPITAL ; HARRISON LAUNCHED THE REFRIGERATING COMPRESSOR ON THE INDUSTRIAL SCALE (IN ABOUT 1855)WITH IMMEDIATELY USEFUL PURPOSES ; F. CARRE, BY CREATING THE ABSORPTION MACHINE (1859) WAS MOVED BY HIS TECHNICAL PASSION, BUT IMMEDIATELY FELT POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS. REFRIGERATION BECAME REALLY INDUSTRIAL IN ABOUT 1880 AND ITS DEVELOPMENT MET SEVERAL CATEGORIES OF PURPOSES DISCUSSED HERE: 1. ECONOMIC ; 2. SOCIAL (MEDICINE, HYGIENE, COMFORT, QUALITY OF LIFE) ; 3. PURELY SCIENTIFIC (EITHER IN PHYSICS OR BIOLOGY), THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE LABORATORY BEING THEN TRANSMITTED TO INDUSTRY. UNIQUE FEATURE OF REFRIGERATION: ITS BEGINNING WAS FACILITATED BY THE FORMER USE OF NATURAL COLD.
