Summary

A CONTROLLED COOLING AND WARMING RATE BIOLOGICAL FREEZE-THAW SYSTEM UTILIZING A COMBINATION OF VAPORIZED LIQUID NITROGEN REFRIGERATION, RESISTIVE CONVECTIVE HEATING AND MICROWAVE RADIATIVE HEATING WAS DEVELOPED. EXCELLENT RESULTS WERE OBTAINED FOR THE COOLING OF 1-ML WATER SAMPLES CONTAINED IN SMALL PLASTIC VIALS AT RATES BETWEEN 1/10 AND 15 K/MIN AND REASONABLY GOOD RESULTS WERE ALSO OBTAINED FOR THE CONTROLLED WARMING AT A RATE OF 12 K/MIN.
