Cool ceilings and room ventilation: together they have a future.

Summary

Cool ceilings must be complemented with a ventilation device, for two reasons: they cannot bring in outside air ; and (with some exceptions) they can carry away only sensible heat, not latent heat, which comes from the humidity released by people, plants, etc. Cool ceilings can be combined with all current ventilation systems ; these can provide either turbulent convection, laminar flow, or a mixture of the two. The author discusses the factors which affect the relative shares of overall cooling of radiative and convection cooling. Care must be taken in adjusting capacity and in avoiding sweating on the ceilings.
