In 1992, the Mponeng Mine partook in a divisionally funded project to investigate the viability of using ice-production technology, developed by Israeli Desalination Engineering; the study involved subjecting pre-cooled feed water to a vacuum, thus lowering the triple point to a level where ice forms in a saline solution.
