CRYOGENIC REFRIGERATION FOR SPACE EXPLORATION. A CHALLENGE FOR THE FUTURE.

Author(s) : SMITH J. L. Jr

Summary

THE APPLICATION OF CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES IN SPACE EXPLORATION IS REVIEWED FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM DESIGNER. THE STRINGENT REQUIREMENTS FOR SATELLITE AND SPACE CRAFT REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS ARE BRIEFLY OUTLINED. THE IMPACT OF THESE REQUIREMENTS ON CURRENT CRYOGENIC REFRIGERATION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS IS EXPLAINED. THE FUNDAMENTAL LIMITATIONS ON CRYOGENIC REFRIGERATION PROCESS IS DISCUSSED TO SHOW POSSIBILITIES FOR MAJOR ADVANCES IN THE TECHNOLOGY.
