Current state of Research and Development projects on centrifugal compressors.

Summary

The increase of specific capacity of centrifugal compressors, their reliability and their user friendliness requires research into improvements both in aerodynamic and mecanical engineering. Through some examples several research avenues in this field are examined: increase in the operating field of a compressor by use of variable section diffusers; decrease of the losses by reduction of the clearances (use of abradable materials) and by improvement of sealing devices; better knowledge of the dynamic limits.
