AN EQUATION CORRESPONDING TO THE BEALE EQUATION FOR FREE-PISTON STIRLING ENGINE IS PRESENTED FOR STIRLING CRYOCOOLERS. THE WORKING VALUE OF THE CONSTANT EQUIVALENT TO THE BEALE NUMBER IS CALCULATED CONSIDERING THREE STIRLING CRYOCOOLERS OF INTERMEDIATE OR LARGE REFRIGERATING CAPACITY. THIS EQUATION PROVIDES A GUIDELINE FOR PRELIMINARY SIZING OF LARGE STIRLING CRYOCOOLERS (REFRIGERATION CAPACITY MORE THAN 1 KW AT 100 K). J. V.
