Summary

A METHOD IS GIVEN OF ASSESSING THE OPTIMUM REFRIGERANT (R12) CHARGE FOR DOMESTIC REFRIGERATORS EMPLOYING A CAPILLARY TUBE EXPANSION DEVICE. THIS AMOUNT OF REFRIGERANT WAS FOUND TO DEPEND MAINLY ON THE VOLUME OF THE EVAPORATOR AND CONDENSER. MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE WITH DIFFERENT CHARGES AND IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE IS NOT A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR AND THAT COP IS MORE SENSITIVE TO OVERFILLING THAN UNDERFILLING. A 10% EXCESS OF REFRIGERANT REDUCED THE COP BY 6-12%, WHEREAS A SIMILAR DEFICIENCY OF REFRIGERANT REDUCED THE COP BY ONLY 4-6%. EQUATIONS AND DIAGRAMS ARE GIVEN ENABLING THE OPTIMUM CHARGE TO BE ESTIMATED FOR REFRIGERATION UNITS HAVING INTERIOR VOLUMES OF 120 TO 180 DM3 AND WITH VOLUMETRIC CAPACITIES OF CONDENSER AND EVAPORATOR IN THE RANGE 90-160 CM3.
