Development of phase change slurries based on micro-encapsulated paraffin.
Author(s) : GSCHWANDER S., SCHOSSIG P., HENNING H. M.
Summary
Phase Change Slurries (PCS) based on micro-encapsulated paraffin have been developed and investigated during the last three years. This contribution figures out the development and adaptations of microcapsules and phase change materials to different requirements of cooling- and heating applications. This includes the development from the first unstable capsules to the improved shear stable micro-encapsulated paraffin. Enthalpy curves are presented that show different micro-encapsulated sorts of technical grade paraffin measured by differential scanning calorimeter. Scanning electron microscopy images show the evolution of the capsules from the first unstable to the shear stable capsules, which are robust enough to withstand the hard requirements of pumping applications. Some results of thermo-physical and hydraulic research, which were obtained by measurements in a test facility, are shown. The test facility was built with conventional components like plate heat exchangers, expansion vessels ball valves and automatic breathers. The latest tests show the applicability of these PCS in conventional heating and cooling applications under real pumping conditions.
