Summary

THE PAPER GIVES AN ANALYSIS OF THE DISTURBANCE SPECTRUM WITHIN AN ADIABATIC SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET, AND DISCUSSES THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CONSTRUCTING A STABLE HIGH FIELD NIOBIUM-TITANIUM MAGNET. USING NIOBIUM-TITANIUM WIRES THE AUTHORS WOUND 6 SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNETS SMEARED WITH WAX-ALUMINA OR WAX-GADOLINIUM OXIDE POWDER. ALL THE MAGNETS PRODUCED CENTRAL FIELDS HIGHER THAN 8.6 T. THE QUENCHING CURRENT ON THE LOAD LINES WAS HIGHER THAN 95% AS MUCH AS THE CRITICAL CURRENT OF SHORT SAMPLES, AND NO TRAINING EFFECT WAS FOUND.
