Summary

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PAPER IS TO DISCUSS HOW THE GRADUAL DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN CONCEPTS FOR LNG STORAGE SYSTEMS HAS HELPED TO ENHANCE STORAGE SAFETY AND ECONOMY. THE EXPERIENCE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM IS COMPARED WITH PRACTICE IN OTHER COUNTRIES WITH SIMILAR LNG STORAGE REQUIREMENTS. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THE EXCELLENT RECORD OF SAFETY AND RELIABILITY EXHIBITED BY TANKS WITH A PRIMARY METAL CONTAINER DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED TO APPROVED STANDARDS. THE WORK CARRIED OUT TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MATERIALS, FIRE PROTECTION, AND MONITORING SYSTEMS FOR USE IN LNG STORAGE IS ALSO SUMMARIZED.
