Summary

IN A METAL WITH AN ANISOTROPIC ELECTRON DISPERSION CURVE THE REGION OF A STEEP SOUND ATTENUATION DROP OBSERVED AT THE SUPERCONDUCTING TRANSITION CAN BE PRECEDED BY AN ATTENUATION RISE. SUCH A QUALITATIVE DIFFERENCE FROM THE BEHAVIOUR PREDICTED BY THE BARDEEN-COOPER-SCHRIEFFER (BCS) EXPRESSION IS DUE TO THE DEPENDENCE OF THE VELOCITY OF THE CARRIERS IN THE SUPERCONDUCTOR ON THE ENERGY IF THE FERMI SURFACE CONTAINS FLATTENED SPOTS. THIS ENTAILS ESSENTIAL MODIFICATION OF THE TEMPERATURE BEHAVIOUR OF THE SOUND VELOCITY.
