Devices for the in-vitro-measurement of the cooling-effect of cryosurgical probes.

Summary

Two devices are presented for the in-vitro measurement of the heat flux as well as the ice front and the temperature field around a cryosurgical probe working under controlled thermal boundary conditions. The heat flux is measured with a compensation heating device in a stirred water volume of controlled temperature. With an integration method the mean power (heat flux) removable by the cryoprobe is calculated from the transient compensation heat registered by a computer. The transient ice front position around the cryoprobe tip and the corresponding temperature field are measured in a metallic sphere of controlled surface temperature filled with a special test medium. The temperature field is measured by thermocouples placed radially at various distances from the probe tip. The ice front position is determined by an ultrasound signal.
