District cooling and district heating: infrastructure of sustainable development in adriatic countries.

Summary

District heating and cooling (DHDC) of the coastal residential and tourist settlements based on the small cogeneration plant supported by solar energy, can supply both heating and cooling energy at prices, which are lower, when compared to those based on extra light heating oil and electric energy from the grid. The heat energy supply facilitates the microturbine and peak boiler, both based on LPG and supported by thermal solar collectors. The absorption and compression heat pumps supply the chilled water for base and peak cooling respectively. The electric energy from the microturbine will be used to feed own electrically driven systems and components of DHDC. Investments in DHDC are assessed about 900 HRK/m2, whereas energy savings based on present energy prices are about 50 HRK/m2, of net area building. The paper shows that communal energy systems can lower CO2 emissions to one third only, when compared with present emissions according to a "business as usual" scenario. Many direct and indirect benefits to the local economy and communities, such as investments in technologies and new jobs, have been carefully analyzed.
