Summary

SUS 321 AND 347 STAINLESS STEELS WERE AGED AT 973 K (700 DEG C) FOR 75 HOURS AFTER WHICH THEIR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES WERE STUDIED AT LIQUID HELIUM TEMPERATURE. THE DEGREE OF DEGRADATION IN SUS 347 WAS MUCH LESS THAN THAT OF SUS 321. THE RESULTS CLEARLY INDICATE THAT DEGRADATION AT 4 K IS SMALL EXCEPT THAT OF FRACTURE TOUGHNESS DUE TO AGING, BUT THIS CAN BE AVOIDED BY CONTROLLING THE MORPHOLOGY OF PRECIPITATES AND ADDING NIOBIUM.
