Summary

THE THERMAL FLUCTUATIONS OF THE SURFACE OF LIQUID HELIUM RESULT IN A SHIFT OF THE HYDROGEN-LIKE LEVELS IN THE TRANSVERSE MOTION OF ELECTRONS LOCATED ABOVE THE HELIUM. THE CORRESPONDING RISE OF THE RESONANCE TRANSITION FREQUENCIES AT 1 K IS ABOUT 1.5 GHERTZ FOR HELIUM 4 AND ABOUT 300 MHERTZ FOR HELIUM 3. THE DEPENDENCE OF THE EFFECT ON TEMPERATURE SHOULD MAKE FEASIBLE AN EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATION OF THE EFFECT.
