Summary

THE COMPRESSORS REFERRED TO ARE LARGE CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSORS HAVING A NUMBER OF STAGES AND A RELATIVELY HIGH COMPRESSION RATIO. THE AUTHORS POINT OUT THAT COMPRESSOR DRIVING POWER CAN REPRESENT A SIGNIFICANT PART OF PLANT RUNNING COSTS AND EVEN SMALL INEFFICIENCIES RESULT IN HIGH POWER BILLS OVER THE YEARS. INEFFICIENCIES DISCUSSED INCLUDE LEAKAGE, PRESSURE DROP THROUGH INTERCOOLERS AND INTERSTAGE CONNECTING PASSAGES, AND ALSO THE AERODYNAMIC CONFIGURATIONS OF IMPELLOR AND CASING DESIGN. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN OF THE TYPE OF SAVINGS THAT CAN ACCRUE FROM RELATIVELY SMALL CHANGES IN DESIGN. D.W.H.
