FOR THE INFRARED SPACE OBSERVATORY PROJECT, AN ELECTRIC MOTOR HAS BEEN STUDIED AND TESTED. THIS STEPPER MOTOR IS ABLE TO RUN UNDER VACUUM AT LIQUID HELIUM TEMPERATURES. ITS SUPERCONDUCTING WINDING ALLOWS IT TO RUN WITH AN ELECTRICAL HEAT DISSIPATION LOWER THAN 1 MILLIW. IT HAS BEEN SUBMITTED TO A COMPLETE TEST PROGRAMME. THE MOTOR TORQUE HAS BEEN MEASURED DOWN TO 8 K.
