Summary

Within conventional cable technology the terminations are important components. This importance is perhaps even larger when working with high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable terminations must span a temperature range 77 to 300 K. Termination is insulated with insulating oil or air, gases nitrogen and liquid nitrogen and is cooled with liquid nitrogen. An appropriate insulation with a respective transition to the highly stressed cable dielectric must be provided, and the coolant must be fed into the conductor. Particularly difficult conditions for high voltage insulation had to be get over with HTS cable. In particular, several environments can violently raise the flashover possibility at the HTS cable termination. Therefore, in order to insulating design of HTS cable termination, the paper reported on experimental investigations dealing with the impact of different conditions on the electrical strength. The authors studied the surface flashover voltage on the insulator at the temperature region between 77 and 300 K for the most suitable HTS cable termination.
