Energy and emissions modelling of two representative independent convenience store archetypes at national scale.

Summary
According to the UK Association of Convenience Stores, over 50,000 convenience stores were operating nationwide in 2025, of which 71% were independently owned. Despite their large numbers and relatively high energy use, this sector remains overlooked in energy and decarbonisation studies. This study develops a bottom-up modelling framework to estimate energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in UK independent convenience stores. Detailed EnergyPlus models were developed for two store archetypes, together representing approximately 31% of independent convenience stores nationally. The combined annual energy consumption of these stores was estimated at 770.7 GWh. Associated greenhouse gas emissions amounted to 169.9 ktCO₂e, comprising 150.7 ktCO₂e from Scope 2 electricity use and 19.24 ktCO₂e from Scope 1 refrigerant-related emissions. These results establish a quantified baseline for assessing refrigeration-related emissions in small food retail and support evaluation of decarbonisation strategies.
