Energy efficiency of buildings at inter-building scale: review of strategies for performance analysis and optimization.

Author(s) : PISELLO A. L.

Summary

The proposal of effective solution for energy efficiency in buildings have reached a maturity level through the implementation of methods and solutions that consider the building as a stand-alone object. The increasing urban density and the arising of local urban phenomena drives the research to develop new increasingly sophisticated techniques aimed at: (i) investigating building thermal-energy behavior in urban areas, and at (ii) optimizing buildings performance and inter-building environment quality. This review paper deals with both methodological and physical approaches focused on both of these purposes. The Inter-Building Effect method is showed, together with its development about social and occupant-based implications. New materials for building envelope and urban pavements are showed as possible techniques to environmental quality and energy efficiency at inter-building scale.
