Summary
The paper deals with the selection of energy systems serving an urban district: an Italian example is cited, which includes mainly commercial and industrial buildings and trading centres, but also residential buildings and hotels. Energy requirements, in terms of electrical energy and heating and cooling loads, are listed on an hour-by-hour basis, so that the operating cost for energy can be compared with the investment cost of different technical options. Among these, the following ones are analysed: individual or central heating systems coupled with traditional air conditioning systems, cogenerative district heating coupled with compression and absorption refrigerating systems, cogenerative systems based on gas piston engine or gas turbines.
