Summary

This study analyses renovation alternatives to improve energy performance of traditional barn-dwelling type rural houses in Estonia (cold climate). The study was done by a combination of field measurements and simulations. The current status of structures and indoor climate, typical houses and structures, as well the need for renovation was determined by field measurements in 24 houses. From studied houses an example house was selected for simulation. Energy performance of renovation alternatives were modelled using the dynamic multi-zone building simulation software IDA-ICE. The simulation results show how different renovation measures influence the energy performance as a percentage from the current setup and which levels can be obtained. In the selection of energy renovation measures for old traditional rural houses, heritage values should be taken into account. Therefore, multi-criteria analysis needs to be carried out.
