Summary

Unrelated cord blood transplantation has rapidly increased in Japan. The Japan cord blood network regulates the etchnical standard for cryopreservation of cord blood units (CBU) and requires validation data on preservation of the units for each cord blood bank. In this paper, the author shows the viability of cord blood cells of test samples related to that of CBU for transplantation. From analysis of actual transplantation, there is no correlation between engraftmemt ratio and viability of test sample. However, since no method of evaluation of cryopreserved cord blood cells has yet been standardized, it is therefore very important to establish one soon in order to achieve assurance of safety for cord blood transplantation.
